WHO IS POSTERBOY?

“I could never have been a blond bombshell like Electra Heart, nor could I have descended from another world like Ziggy Stardust. So, I wanted to create a persona that epitomises the average joe, our uninspired side, our human side and that is POSTERBOY.”

POSTERBOY is the alias of Scottish singer-songwriter and visual artist Rory Russell who is undoubtedly destined for a breakthrough year in 2021, kicking off on Friday 26 th February with the release of the eponymous lead single from his ambitious upcoming audio-visual project ‘20X20’, which will be released later in 2021.

POSTERBOY’s music is reminiscent of 80’s new wave, like Depeche Mode, Eurythmics, Pet Shop Boys and Soft Cell, as well as more contemporary pop-pioneers like Björk, St. Vincent, Christine & the Queens, MARINA and Robyn. The lyrics also address prominent social themes, such as queer identity, homophobia, race and gender violence, and existential dread, which is especially evident in new single ’20X20’.

Born out of a sense of detachment from reality and an attempt to seek solace in the surreal, POSTERBOY is the moniker through which Rory’s exciting upcoming project will be released, with forthcoming single ‘20X20’ acting as an illustrative introduction to POSTERBOY’s world.

‘20X20’ is the embodiment of Rory’s attempts to channel the feeling of being overwhelmed, that many of us have felt in the last year about the current state of affairs, into something creative, by approaching it with wit and humour, which is what makes it an ideal introduction to POSTERBOY and one that will no doubt garner a great deal of attention for this extremely promising new artist.

ABOUT 20X20

The song was entirely written, self-produced and brought to life through eye-catching visuals all from his bedroom, where he has, like most of us, spent the best part of a year trying to come to terms with isolation and learning how to cope with it.

‘20X20’ is about being terrified of the outside world, barricading yourself inside your own head and trying to deal with the mental breakdown that follows. It’s about finding refuge in some of the weirder and more peculiar things in your imagination to try to keep you sane, and not being afraid to embrace the absurd to help you get by when the real world feels overwhelming”.
