WHO IS POSTERBOY?
“I could never have been a blond bombshell like Electra Heart, nor could I have descended from another world like Ziggy Stardust. So, I wanted to create a persona that epitomises the average joe, our uninspired side, our human side and that is POSTERBOY.”
POSTERBOY is the alias of Scottish singer-songwriter and visual artist Rory Russell who is undoubtedly destined for a breakthrough year in 2021.
POSTERBOY’s music is reminiscent of 80’s new wave, like Depeche Mode, Eurythmics, Pet Shop Boys and Soft Cell, as well as more contemporary pop-pioneers like Björk, St. Vincent, Christine & the Queens, MARINA and Robyn. The lyrics also address prominent social themes, such as queer identity, homophobia, race and gender violence, and existential dread, which is especially evident in new single ’VHS’.
Born out of a sense of detachment from reality and an attempt to seek solace in the surreal, POSTERBOY is the moniker through which Rory’s exciting upcoming project will be released, with forthcoming single ‘VHS’ taking a scary look at the world around us.

‘VHS’ is the embodiment of Rory’s attempts to channel the feeling of being overwhelmed, that many of us have felt in the last year about the current state of affairs, into something creative, by approaching it with wit and humour, which is what makes it an ideal introduction to POSTERBOY and one that will no doubt garner a great deal of attention for this extremely promising new artist.
ABOUT VHS
The song was entirely written, self-produced and brought to life through eye-catching visuals all from his bedroom, where he has, like most of us, spent the best part of a year trying to come to terms with isolation and learning how to cope with it.
‘VHS’ is about that coming of age moment when you realise the things we were scared of as kids can’t compare to what’s really out there. “The monsters we grew up with on TV, they can’t quite make us scream like they used to do…” Using classic cinema and monsters as metaphors, Posterboy paints the world in a familiar cartoonish way. The contrast between his lyrics and production creates a powerful horror-pop masterpiece.
